A Collector's Guide: Choosing Your First Redwood or Yosemite Print

This isn't meant to be a curator's training class or an art history course, just some thoughts on how to go about selecting your artwork from our Galleries.

1. Start with the room, not the image

Think first about where this piece will live: over a sofa, in a hallway, above a bed, or in an office. Measure the wall and aim for artwork that’s roughly two‑thirds the width of the furniture beneath it so the photograph feels intentional, not lost.

 • For grounded calm and deep forest stillness, look to the Redwood work:

 • “I Went To The Woods” – a quiet walk into the redwood forest, perfect for bedrooms, reading corners, or contemplative spaces.

 • “Armstrong Woods IV: Lucem in Nemore” – luminous light through Armstrong Redwoods, ideal where you want a sense of gentle, vertical light.

 • For a sense of journey, granite drama, and Sierra scale, choose Yosemite and Sequoia scenes:

 • “The Generals Highway II” – the winding road into Sequoia, a strong choice for living rooms, offices, and entryways.

 • “Bonum Mane Noctis (El Cap Sunset)” – El Capitan at sunset, full of color and evening atmosphere as a storm approaches the Valley, great as a statement piece over a sofa or bed or in an entryway.

 • Additional Yosemite/forest images at

•Leviathans I" —showing the Three Brothers rising out of the mist over the Merced River at sunrise

• "Ecclesia Novis" — Cathedral Rock in these & snow, reflecting in the meadow pond beneath.

can be positioned as complementary views—one more intimate, one more expansive—depending on the room.

If you want a room to feel tranquil, lean toward forest interiors and soft light; if you want energy and a sense of movement, choose images with road, cliffs, or strong sunset color.

3. Don’t be afraid of going bigger

Most people underestimate how large a print a room can comfortably hold. Because these images are captured at very high resolution on a Phase One XT or other high-resolution system, they are designed to be printed big—so you can stand close and still see the texture of bark, granite, and ground.

But by the same measure, don't go too big Make sure your artwork has "room to breathe" and isn't overcrowded or detracti9ng from other items of importance in your life.

 • For a “journey through the Sierra” sequence:

 • Place The Generals Highway II in an entryway or living room as the beginning of the drive.

 • Hang Bonum Mane Noctis (El Cap Sunset) where you want the emotional high point of Yosemite—such as over a sofa or in a primary bedroom.

 • For a “forest to valley” pairing:

 • Choose I Went To The Woods” or "Armstrong Woods IV: Lucem in Nemore" for a quieter space like a reading nook or hallway.

 • Pair it with one of your Yosemite or river‑valley images (for example, Tunnel Vision) in a larger room, so walking through your home feels like walking from forest into open valley.
