Redwood Light

There is no bad time to photograph in the redwoods. Even at night, if you find a break in the canopy along a river, or at the edge of a grove, you can make lovely images. For my birthday weekend this year, we visited Founders Grove in Humboldt en route to staying at Crescent City for a long weekend. While there, we hiked a grove in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park we had not previously visited. Although the coastal mist had already birned off by the time we arrived, and the early afternoon light was fairly harsh, it was a warm light and, filtered by the millions of needles and split and reflected by massive trunks, it was as if a studio had been designed for making portraits of giants.
