Many animals build, and some even use tools to do so. But none save humans build more than their needs require, build in homage to something spiritual or secular or both. From our perspective, building is heroic, it sets us wrestling with or against the universe, embodying ambition, spirit, and even fantasy, in our quest to be more—however briefly—than the ashes and dust from whence we came.
