Mono Lake in California is one of my favorite places on the planet. Stark and nearly barren, it presents a sense of mystery, solitude, and serenity. In the summer, it can be quite crowded, but in the winter, it is not difficult to find oneself alone there. This evening, the sunset behind me illuminated the eastern sky, the water, the tufa, and the hills in a dappled palette of blues and golds and earthy glows. The title is a Latin word, meaning "to paint."
