I was making images of the iconic hammock in the water of the lagoon at the St. Regis Bora Bora on this morning. There was a mist in the air, and the water was relatively gentle. I was on the western side of the hammock facing into the sun; there is an image from this session here on the website. I remembered on this occasion to stop and turn around to look behind me to see how the world looked, and I was struck by the golden glow of the sunrise on the overwater bungalows. The mist softened the view, adding a sense of romance and discovery, of old Polynesia. Of the painter Paul Gaugin, thus the title of this piece.
