Coral Sky

Paul Gaugin’s South Pacific paintings are rightly loved for their capture of the colors of Polynesia—the brilliant blues of the islands, the skies, the waters, the golds and oranges of dawn and dusk. Sunsets, especially those just before or after storms can be unusually intense and eerie, with skies half dark but brilliantly and colorfully lit. This coralline sunset, pushed westward by an approaching storm, bathed the turquoise water and this black-tip reef shark in the light from a painting in another time.
