Pincer Moon

Based on TPE projections, I headed to Mono Lake to stay overnight and catch what would hopefully be a lovely sunrise. I left early enough so that I could arrive in time for sunset as well, just in case it turned out to be better than predicted. But on the way to ML, I got stuck behind some slow-moving trucks that cost me about twenty minutes. As I headed from the overlook down into the basin, I feared I would miss the light, though the few clouds offered me the modest consolation that perhaps I wasn't missing much. I headed straight to a spot from which I had wanted to shoot before. I was shooting with a brand new back, which was still sorting buggy firmware, and I had not gotten as familiar with it as I would have liked. Hustling down to the shore from the parking area, I arrived just as the sun dipped beneath the Eastern Sierras. I set up my tripod as quickly as possible, estimated my light and captured this image as the clouds reached out to swallow the light beneath an indifferent moon.
